Play through this interactive game to learn about Plate Tectonics and Large Scale Systems. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Mountains can form when tectonic plates collide with each other, pushing land upwards.
Canyons are deep valleys located in mountain ranges that are surrounded by steep mountain sides.
Different landforms on Earth include mountains, hills, valleys, canyons, deltas, sand dunes, and plains.
The geosphere includes Earth’s crust, mantle, outer and inner cores.
Earth’s mantle is hot, soft, solid rock.
Earth’s crust contains rock, soil, and sediment.
A delta is a fan-shaped piece of land that forms at the mouth of a river from the deposition of sand and mud.
A plateau is a region of high, flat ground.
A plain is a large region of flat land.
Mountain ranges are groups of mountains connected by high elevation land.
A hill is an elevated area of land that is not as high as a mountain.
A valley is a low elevation area of land located between mountains or hills.
Physical, or topographic, maps show the physical shapes of landforms.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

How does Earth's surface change? How can maps help us understand the Earth? What are some landforms in your geographical area? What are some other landforms found on Earth that are not in your area?

After the Game

In this game, you reviewed the difference between plateaus and plains. What is at least one difference? Which part of the Earth's crust is hottest? Why do you think that is? In this game, you learned about the various layers of the earth. What are they, and how do they differ from one another? In this game, you learned about several landforms. What are the different landforms, and how do they differ? In this game you learned about a specific type of map that allows us to see the various types of landforms in a region - what was this type of map called? When Ms. Rose showed the illustration of the delta, describe how water changed the Earth's surface? Eroded materials are called sediment. Ms. Rose also taught you about canyons. Is a canyon created by erosion or deposition? Explain your answer. Ms. Rose described how mountains are formed. In your own words, describe the process that occurs that creates a mountain.
