Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Multiplicative Comparison Word Problems. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Compare quantities multiplicatively (ex: This tower is 3 times as high as that one).
Must answer the question, what factor would one multiply one quantity in order to result in the other.
Create multiplicative sentences from verbal statements (ex: Pencils from the school vendor are 3x more expensive than if we ordered them from Amazon. If the pencils from Amazon are 2 dollars how much are the school’s vendors?).
Writing the equation is the task, solving is not necessary.
Use tape diagrams to show comparison between 2 multiplicative quantities.
Use scale factors greater than 1.
Use symbols for unknown quantities in the multiplicative equations.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

In this game, you will have to use coins to make multiplication problems - how would you make the problem 3*5 using coins and the equal group method? In this game, you will see problems such as 2 groups of 6 coins - how would you write this problem as a multiplication problem? How is comparing with multiplication different from comparing with addition? How can you use equations to solve multi-step problems? If you find 12 pieces of gold while searching with your two friends, how could you split the gold into equal amounts of gold for each of you?

After the Game

What patterns did you notice while multiplying whole numbers that can help you multiply more efficiently? What real life situations require the use of multiplication? When you are given 3 groups of something with the same number in each group, how can you determine how many total items you have? When you were building masts for the ship, was lowering the same as multiplying or dividing? Was raising the same as multiplying or dividing?
