Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Solve Problems Using Scale. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Scale drawings are drawings that represent measurements of a real object in terms of smaller units of measurement.
Angles in a scale drawing are the same as the corresponding angles in the real object.
Lengths are not the same in a scale drawing, but differ by a constant scale factor.
Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing.
Reproduce a scale drawing at a different scale.
Area in the scale drawing is also a constant multiple of area in the original. The constant is the square of the scale factor.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

How are scale models made to look exactly like the real thing? What is the formula for finding the area of a square? How do we find the square of a number? If you had a rectangle with all sides measuring 11 inches, and scaled it by a factor of 2, what would the sides measure after being scaled? In this game, you have to convert from inches to feet - how many inches are in a foot? What is true about the angles of the two figures that are scaled?

After the Game

What process did you use to find the area of the farm? How did the drawings help you find the actual size of the objects? When might we use scale drawings in real life? Why are any two squares always scaled? What are three real-world examples that the game provided for how scaled drawings are used?
