Instructions
Play through this interactive game to learn about Subtraction As Addition Of Additive Inverse. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.
Main Concepts
Integers on a number line are distances from 0. The distance can be shown using absolute value, |d|, for all positive and negative integers.
If p is positive, then its absolute value |p| is just p; if p is negative then |p| = - p.
P – q is the distance from p to q regardless of direction so adding the distances of p and q can be seen as p + (-q). Therefore p – q = p + (-q).
Model on a number line adding the distances p – q as adding the two graphs of p and (-q) by attaching the length of the graph of q to the endpoint of the graph of p and the overlaying portion understood as additive inverses and the portion left over as p – q or p + (-q).
Show additive inverses as graphed distances on the number line and when the distances are added together they overlap and have a sum of 0).
Discussion Questions
Before the Game
What is meant by the absolute value of a number? What are additive inverses? What are the rules for adding integers? How is subtraction similar to addition of a negative integer?
After the Game
In the game, when the starting term was larger than the sum, what steps did you take? How did the game demonstrate the use of additive inverses to get the hero to the next room? How did you know when to add a positive or a negative number?
