Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Real World Physical Area. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Find area of rectangles to solve problems.
The areas should not all be rectangular but decomposable into rectangles (ex. L-Shaped or T-shaped)
Find the area of rectilinear figures by decomposing into non-overlapping rectangles that fill the area, finding the areas of each part, and adding.
Find the area of rectilinear figures by decomposing into non-overlapping rectangles that fill the area, finding the areas of each part, and adding.
Side lengths are whole numbers.
Decomposing a Shape into multiple rectangles and adding them together to finding total area does not affect the overall area.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is area? What is perimeter? What is the difference between the width and length? How could you find the length and width of an object in real life? What tools might you use for the above question? How would you find the area of a triangle with a height of 2, a base of 1, and a hypotenuse of 3?

After the Game

Why do you only need to measure one side of a square to find the area and perimeter? How do you find the perimeter of a square that has a side of 4cm? How do you find the area of a figure with multiple shapes? How do you find the perimeter of an irregular shape? How is the formula for area of a triangle related to the formula for area of a square? What unit is used when we calculate the area of an object? How did the game demonstrate that two figures can have the same area but not the same perimeter?
