Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Measurement Quantities Word Problems. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Show subordinate units in relation to super units (cm in relation to m (100cm = 1mm, 400cm = 4m.)
When expressing larger measurements in smaller units within the metric system use place value knowledge of comparing whole numbers, decimal fractions (a denominator of 10 or 100) and decimals.
Use benchmarks to reason about relative size of units (a meter (e.g., about the height of a tall chair) and a kilometer (e.g., the length of 10 football fields including the end zones, or the distance a person might walk in about 12 minutes.)
Word Problems can be Result Unknown (A bunnies sat on the grass. B more bunnies hopped there. How many bunnies are on the grass now? Or C apples were on the table. I ate B apples. How many apples are on the table now?)
Total unknown ( A red apples and B green apples are on the table. How many apples are on the table?)
Compare Larger and Smaller Unknown (A length is B, a larger length is A times as long, what is the length of the larger expressed in larger units.)
Use knowledge of relative size of units to reason.

After the Game

How do you convert a numbers measured in meters or kilometers? How do you convert a number measured in kilograms to grams? What would you measure in liters and what would you measure in milliliters? How can you apply what you learned to your daily life?
