Instructions
Play through this interactive game to learn about Use Ratios To Convert Measurement Units. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.
Main Concepts
Use relationships given by unit rates to correctly convert between units, (12 inches to a foot, 1000 grams in a kilogram, 100 cm in a meter etc.).
Given a unit convert to express in another unit of different size by setting up the ratio and cross multiplying and dividing. (84 inches equals how may feet? 12in/1ft = 84in/x ft = 84/12 = 7 feet)
When setting up a ratio the units on the top and bottom of both equivalent rations must be consistent (inches/feet = inches to feet).
Problems can be solved by multiplying or dividing the unit rate for a measure. (if there are 5280 ft in 1 mile how many miles is 15840 feet? 15840/5280 = 3miles)
Understand the concept of Pi as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
Discussion Questions
Before the Game
How do you convert from miles to feet and from feet to miles? How do you set up a proportion? How do you find the circumference of a circle? What is the difference between the radius and diameter?
After the Game
In your minefield escape, how did you convert from yards to miles? What is pi? Why is pi such an important, famous number?
