Description

Air Traffic Simulator is a fun game in which you'll have to guide the airplanes safely so that they can land or fly to the correct destination. Here you'll learn about rigid motions and how you can use different transformations in order to achieve all the missions!

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Rotate, Reflect And Translate Angles. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Experiment with translations (sliding a figure in a particular direction for a particular distance), rotations (rotates around a particular point called the center of rotation) and reflections (flipping a point or figure over a particular line called the line of reflection).
Two figures are considered the same if one can be superimposed on the other.
Reflections, rotations, and translations, and compositions of these, are called rigid motions.
Use transparencies to experiment with rigid motions.
Rigid Motions preserve the measurements of angles.
Terminology for transformations, image, pre-image, and preserve are used to describe the effects of rigid motions and other transformations.
Use all transformations in experimentation with angles to see that angles do not change and the line segments or rays that comprise the angles do not change in measure when transformed.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is rigid motion and how can we tell if two shapes are in rigid motion? What differentiates a dilation from a reflection, rotation and translation? What is the center of rotation?

After the Game

When a figure is translated, what directions can it translate? What directions can a figure rotate? How do you know when to use more than one rigid motion?
