Description

When dealing with a line or section, you can slide them one direction to translate them on a map; you’ll learn about it in this rap. With length, coordinates, and slope, there's nothing past your scope. So come rotate, translate, reflect, and boost your students' intellect!

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Properties of Rigid Transformations. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Reflections, rotations, and translations, and compositions of these, are called rigid motions.
Experiment with translations (sliding a figure in a particular direction for a particular distance), rotations (rotates around a particular point called the center of rotation) and reflections (flipping a point or figure over a particular line called the line of reflection).
Use transparencies to experiment with rigid motions.
Rigid Motions preserve the lengths of line segments.
Terminology for transformations, image, pre-image, and preserve are used to describe the effects of rigid motions and other transformations.
Use all transformations in experimentation with lines and line segments of the same length to see that they do not change in length.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What are the properties of a line segment? If you are shown two line segments, what has to be true for them to be congruent? What does rigid motion mean? What are the differences between reflection, rotation, and translation?

After the Game

What are the three rigid transformations? What are the three preserved properties? How can transformations help to determine congruency? Does the location of the figure change as a result of the reflection?
