Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Congruence with Transformations. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Experiment with translations (sliding a figure in a particular direction for a particular distance), rotations (rotates around a particular point called the center of rotation) and reflections (flipping a point or figure over a particular line called the line of reflection).
Two figures are considered the same if one can be superimposed on the other.
Verify experimentally what happens after a figure goes through different transformations.
A sequence of rigid motions taking figure A to figure B, can also find a sequence taking figure B to figure A.
Reflections, rotations, and translations, and compositions of these, are called rigid motions.
Use transparencies to experiment with rigid motions.
Rigid Motions preserve the lengths of line segments and the measurements of angles.
Two figures in the plane are said to be congruent if there is a sequence of rigid motions that takes one figure onto the other

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

Can you find congruent figures in the classroom? Can you find similar figures in the classroom? Are objects that are similar always congruent, why or why not? What is the difference between a reflection and a rotation?

After the Game

How did you use transformations to solve the tangram puzzles? Can you think of any other games or activities you could play using tangram pieces? How can you tell that two shapes are congruent? Are there any ways we use translations, reflections, and rotations of objects or shapes in our lives?
