Main Concepts

Average the absolute values of the deviations from mean to determine MAD.
For distributions in which the mean is the better measure of center, variation is measured in terms of how far the data values deviate from the mean. Calculate how far each value is above or below the mean, and these deviations from the mean are the first step in building a measure of variation based on spread to either side of center.
Averaging the absolute values of the deviations leads to a measure of variation that is used to describe the spread of a data distribution and in comparing distributions. This measure is called the mean absolute deviation, or MAD.
Use measures of variability to draw comparative inferences on two data sets.
Use median and mean to compare data sets.

Before the Game

Define the following vocabulary: mode, mean, median, absolute deviation, and standard deviation. Explain how each of the above listed values help us as mathematicians when we are analyzing a number set. What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?

After the Game

Roll dice 7 times and record the numbers: find the mode, mean, median, absolute deviation and standard deviation for this number set. How is finding the median different for even and odd number sets? How do you find the absolute deviation for a set of numbers? After finding the absolute deviation, how do you use those numbers to find the standard deviation? When would we need to use these math skills in real life?
