Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Show Fractional Values with a Line Plot. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Reason that since there are b portions of 1/b in 1 then there must be a x b in a.
In order to add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators you must find equivalent fractions with the same denominator.
See that dividing a whole number by a unit fraction is determining how many of that unit fraction is in the whole number.
Use factor families to show that a / 1/b = c so c x 1/b = a.
Use visual fraction models to show and prove reasoning.
Recognize that division of a whole number as multiplying by a unit fraction.
Due to the reasoning that dividing a whole number can be represented as a fraction, divide a unit fraction by a whole number.
Use visual fraction models to show the quotient.
Dividing a unit fraction into more whole number parts means partitioning the denominator into smaller parts.
Finding the equivalent fractions with common denominators does not change the value of either fraction.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What are the steps used in multiplying fractions? How do you find the least common denominator? What is a unit fraction? How do I show a whole number as a fraction?

After the Game

Where were you successful in this game? In this game, you had to find the least common denominator when adding fractions - were you able to use multiples of the denominators to find this? Why do you have to change the position of the numerator and denominator when dividing fractions? Why do you have to find a common denominator when adding or subtracting fractions?
