Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Know And Apply Circumference And Area Formulas. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

A radius of a circle is the measure from the center point of the circle to the edge. All radii in the same circle are equivalent.
A diameter is a line that extends from edge to edge through the center point of a circle. All diameters in the same circle are equivalent.
The diameter is twice the radius (d = 2r).
Circumference of a circle is the distance around a circle.
Pi or π is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.
The area of a circle can be found using the formula A = πr^2, where r is the radius and π is estimated as 3.14 or 22/7.
The circumference can be found using the formula C = d π. If given only the radius then the Circumference can be found using C = 2 π r.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is the approximate value of pi that we use in a formula? When is it necessary to find the circumference of a circle? What is the relationship between the radius and the diameter of a circle? Pi is an irrational non repeating decimal - how do we treat this when using Pi in calculations?

After the Game

How did we calculate the ratio between the diameter and the circumference? In the game, how did we calculate the value of pi? What is the difference between the circumference and area of a circle?
