Instructions
Play through this interactive game to learn about Use Tiling To Prove Area = L X W. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.
Main Concepts
Rotate rectangular arrays physically and mentally to see that Length and Width are interchangeable.
When rotating rectangular arrays multiply to see that the Area does not change when rotated.
Use rotation of rectangular arrays to show commutative property A = l x w, A = w x l (Area is 4 x 8 or Area = 8 x 4)
Use area models to represent the distributive property in mathematical reasoning.
Use area models to show distributive property (Partitioned strips for rows that can be manipulated to show the addition of products and distributive property).
Discussion Questions
Before the Game
How do we determine area? Can you use counting blocks to find the area? What real life situations could be helped by knowing the area of something?
After the Game
In this game, you were required to complete area models to achieve the desired area - how does the distributive property relate to area? If area is L x W, does it matter the order we multiply them? How does the commutative property relate to area models? What did you have to know in order to pass each level?
