Main Concepts

Use properties to show addition and subtraction of rational numbers (with negative numbers).

Commutative and associative property are used when canceling additive inverses as it can be done in any order.

Use distributive property to separate the negative symbol from an integer (-6 + (-4) = -1 (6 + 4) = -(10) = -10).

Additive inverse property is used to describe how opposites will always sum to 0.

What is a number line? How can you easily tell a positive number apart from a negative number? Which direction would you move on the number line if you are adding a positive number? Which direction would you move on the number line if you are adding a negative number?
