Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Write Simple Expressions. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Given scenarios, write expressions to accurately reflect their mathematical value with all 4 operations and can include grouping symbols (Parenthesis, brackets or braces).
Written expressions do not have to be evaluated but interpretation can be drawn from expressions (2 x (7+201) can be said to be twice the sum of 201 and 7).
Model with illustrations or pictures the value of expressions without evaluating (3 x (4+8) as a picture with 4 red and 8 green shapes written 3x to show that 3 x (4+8) is 3x as large as (4+8).
Interpret words and phrases as operational cue words.
The differing ways the calculations can be expressed also help to illustrate the commutative laws of multiplication and addition.
Expressions are a series of numbers and symbols, such as +, -, x, and ÷, without an equal sign.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is the difference between multiplication and division? Does it matter which order you multiply or divide numbers? What are expressions? What words in an expression tell you to add and what words tell you to subtract? What are the Order of Operations? What is the difference between an expression and equation? Can an expression contain more than one operation?

After the Game

Why could you not place a smaller number before a larger on when subtracting numbers in the game? How did parentheses change how you solved an expression? Write the following expression using words: 2 x (3 + 4). Write the following expression using numbers: the quotient of four and five subtracted from seven. What is the commutative property?
