Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Find Compound Probabilities. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Compound probability is relating to the likeliness of two independent events occurring. Compound probability is equal to the probability of the first event multiplied by the probability of the second event (expressed as the multiplication of two fractions where they are successful outcome over total outcomes for both events).
Use tree diagrams and tables for organizing counting of outcomes for compound events.
Use tables to approximate empirical probability of events.
Set up models and use simulation to find desired frequencies.
Use knowledge of theoretical probability to ensure that the sample size will yield the desired results.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is probability? If you had a six-sided die, what is the chance that you would roll a 3? Can you give a few examples in everyday life that involve probability? Can you define theoretical, compound and experimental probability?

After the Game

Why did you need to throw two dice to figure out compound probability? How does experimental probability differ from theoretical probability? If you spin a wheel with 8 possible outcomes, and 2 of them are yellow and the other 6 are green, what is the chance that you land on a green space? Did the theoretical and the experimental probabilities always match as you experimented in the game? If not, how could you have altered the experimental procedures to get a better match?
