Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Compare Decimals To The Hundredths. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Use knowledge of equivalent fractions to show that numbers with the same value expressed as tenths and hundredths are equivalent by converting tenths to hundredths (Show 34/10 = 340/100. 34/10 x 10/10 = 340/100)
Fractions with a denominator of 10 or 100 are called decimal fractions.
Decimal fractions can be converted into decimal notation by using the denominator to indicate where the decimal will be for the numerator (4/100 = .04, 4/10 = .4).
The number of digits to the right of the decimal point indicates the number of zeros in the denominator (3.40 = 340/100 and 3.4 = 34/10.)
Compare decimals using the meaning of a decimal as a fraction, making sure to compare fractions with the same denominator (Compare 0.2 and 0.09, students think of them as 0.20 and 0.09 and see that 0.20 >0.09 because 20/100 > 9/100).
Use visual fraction models to justify (squares of equal size partitioned into tenths and hundredths to show .20 > .09 through shading of the amounts).
