Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Visual Models of Equivalent Fractions. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Find equivalent fractions by multiplying by a fraction equivalent to 1 in the form of n/n, represent this with models getting addition partitions without shading in addition unit fractions.
Understand that the numerical process of multiplying the numerator and denominator of a fraction by the same number, n, corresponds physically to partitioning each unit fraction piece into n smaller equal pieces. A whole is then partitioned into n times as many pieces, and there are n times as many smaller unit fraction pieces as in the original fraction (Multiplying ½ by 2/2 is the same as splitting a rectangle with 2 equal parts into 4 equal parts with 2 parts shaded in to show that ½ = 2/4.)

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What are the two parts of a fraction? What does a fraction represent?

After the Game

How can you tell if two fractions are equivalent? In two equivalent fractions, what must be true of the numerator and denominator of both fractions?
