Instructions
Play through this interactive game to learn about Define Coordinate Plane. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.
Main Concepts
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, to define a coordinate system with the intersection of the lines arranged to coincide with the 0.
When locating a point on the graph, you would first move from the origin horizontally as marked by the x value and then move vertically from that point as denoted by the y value.
The first number in an ordered pair is labeled the x coordinate and the second the y coordinate and is expressed as (x, y).
Where the x-axis and y-axis meet is called the origin and it represents 0 for both axis - the point is therefore (0, 0).
Discussion Questions
Before the Game
What does a graph show us? What is a grid? Where is the x-axis and y-axis on a graph?
After the Game
What is the difference between the x-axis and y-axis? What axis does the first number in an ordered pair represent? In the ordered pair (5, 3), which number represents the y-axis?
