Main Concepts

Reproduction occurs when an organism produces another organism.
A trait is a characteristic of an organism.
Some examples of traits in plants and animals are size, color, texture, shape, and patterns.
An organism that reproduces another organism is called a parent.
An organism that is born from a parent is called an offspring.
Plants and animals inherit genetic information from their parents.
The genetic information that plants and animals inherit determines many of their traits.
The environment in which an organism lives can affect how its inherited traits are expressed.
Food, temperature, sunlight, and water are examples of environmental factors that can affect an organism’s traits.
Many characteristics of plants and animals involve both inheritance and environment.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What do you know about inheritance, or how organisms look the way that they do? You will see many different organisms in this game. How are an organism's physical traits determined? How can an organism's physical traits change over time? How can the climate of an environment affect an organism? Why would an animal need to be camouflaged?

After the Game

Which organism was the most difficult to reproduce with the needed traits? Which organism was the easiest to reproduce with the needed traits? Are all offspring identical from the same parents? What environmental factors did you adjust in order to get an organism you needed? Did the parents you used have an affect on the offspring that was produced?
