Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Conservation of Mass. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

The three common states of matter on Earth are: solid, liquid, and gas.
Evaporation occurs when a substance changes from a liquid to a gas.
Condensation occurs when a substance changes from a gas to a liquid.
Matter can change from one state to another when a substance is heated or cooled.(ES)
During a physical change, the physical properties of a substance change but the chemical properties are the same.
Changes in state are physical changes.
During a chemical change, the chemical properties of a substance change and a new substance is formed.
A mixture is a combination of two or more substances.
In a physical or chemical change, the total weight of the substances remains the same before and after the change occurs.
The law of conservation of mass states that mass is never created or destroyed.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is the difference between a chemical and physical change? What is the law of conservation of mass? What is an element? What is H2O? What elements make up this substance?

After the Game

During your adventure with Mr. Bee, you collected elements to make substances - describe one of the substances you created. What were the elements that you used? How is this substance used in everyday life? How did you know how many elements to add onto the second side of the scale to make it balanced? How could you tell if the scale showed a balanced equation? How are mixtures and suspensions different?
