Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Operations With Scientific Notation. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Scientific Notation is a way of writing very large or very small numbers. A number is written in scientific notation when a number between 1 and 10 is multiplied by a power of 10. For example, 650,000,000 can be written in scientific notation as 6.5 ✕ 10^8
A number can be expressed as a single digit multiplied by a power of ten by counting the place values until you arrive to the right of the ones place and use the number of place values to be the power of 10 (if you moved left the power is + if you moved right the power is – ie. 0.000000000000042 would be expressed as 4.2 x 10^-14
Decimal notation or standard form can be converted to scientific notation to compare more easily (6.48 billion = 6.48 x 10^9
Recognize Calculator and computer notation for scientific notation (3.7E-2 (or 3.7e-2) from technology as 3.7 x 10 -2
Perform addition or subtraction in scientific notation.
Perform multiplication or division in scientific notation.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

How do we add two numbers with the same variable and power? How do we subtract two numbers with the same variable and power? What is the purpose of scientific notation? When is it necessary to use scientific notation to write a number? In which operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) must the exponents be the same and why?

After the Game

How is adding two numbers with the same variable and power similar to adding two numbers in scientific notation? How is scientific notation used as a shortcut when adding and subtracting? How does increasing the exponent by 1 affect the decimal of the number? How does scientific notation make calculations easier? If your product or quotient is a decimal, what happens to the power of ten? Explain the steps you used to multiply numbers in scientific notation - how is this process different for division?
