Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Evaluate Expressions Given Values. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Follow the order of operations when evaluating expressions where from left to right: first grouping symbols, then exponents, then multiplication and division (whatever comes first), and finally addition and subtraction.
An expression is a phrase in a sentence about a mathematical or real-world situation (Contains numbers and can contain operations).
An Algebraic Expression is an expression that contains variables.
Evaluate expressions for given values by substituting the value for the variable (ex: When x = 4 evaluate 3x – 2 = 3(4) – 2 = 12 – 2 = 10).
Evaluate expressions using formulas by correctly substituting the values for the variables and evaluating for the unknown (ex: Volume of a cube is V = s^3, where s =4 so V = 4^3 = 64.)

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is an algebraic expression? What is the formula for the area of a square and the volume of a cube? When given an expression with exponents and numbers and operations, how do we decide which steps to take first? Do you think it matters what order we solve problems in? Have you heard of the order of operations?

After the Game

When did you learn to use the parentheses versus multiplying in the game? How did you figure out which gems to add when there were 3 and 4 spots? How did the multiplication buttons at the bottom affect how you multiplied in the game? In this game you made jewelry with different gems and and different valued rings. How did this make it challenging to reach the specific value for the piece of jewelry? What was your strategy to ensure you reached the given value? Use at least two different vocabulary terms.
