Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Same Denominator Fraction Word Problems. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Use visual models to show that unit fractions compose fractions.
Adding and subtracting fractions is similar to whole number computation in that it is adding or subtracting two number line quantities.
Change unknown (A bunnies were sitting on the grass. Some more bunnies hopped there. Then there were C bunnies. How many bunnies hopped over to the first A bunnies?)
Fractions are a sum of unit fractions (5/4 = 5 x ¼ = 1 ¼ or 5/4 = ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼.)
A mixed number is a whole number plus a fraction smaller than 1, written without the sign, e.g. 5 3/4 means 5 + 3/4 and 7 1/5 means 7 + 1/5.
Use equivalent fraction for mixed number by converting whole into a composition of unit fractions. 1 ¼ = 4/4 + ¼ = 5/4.
In order to formulate an equation of the form A+B = C or A+B = C for a word problem, the numbers A, B, and C must all refer to the same (or equivalent) wholes or unit amounts.
Word Problems can be Result Unknown (A bunnies sat on the grass. B more bunnies hopped there. How many bunnies are on the grass now? Or C apples were on the table. I ate B apples. How many apples are on the table now?)
Total unknown (A red apples and B green apples are on the table. How many apples are on the table?)

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is a fraction? What is a mixed fraction? In this game you will add and subtract fractions - can you do this with fractions that have different denominators? Often we use fractions in recipes - what ingredients might you not need a whole number of?

After the Game

What is one requirement for denominators while adding fractions? How do you adjust the problem correctly so you can meet that requirement? When adding the chocolate bars to the recipe, how did you figure out how many bars that you needed from the fraction 6/3? How did the game help to show you the fraction of cake that was left?
