Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Decimal Notation for Tenths and Hundredths. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Decimal fractions can be converted into decimal notation by using the denominator to indicate where the decimal will be for the numerator (4/100 = .04, 4/10 = .4).
Fractions with a denominator of 10 or 100 are called decimal fractions.
The number of digits to the right of the decimal point indicates the number of zeros in the denominator (3.40 = 340/100 and 3.4 = 34/10)
Use knowledge of equivalent fractions to show that numbers with the same value expressed as tenths and hundredths are equivalent by converting tenths to hundredths (Show 34/10 = 340/100. 34/10 x 10/10 = 340/100)
Locate measurements on a number line diagram where the desired measurement must be determined from the values shown (Indicate where .34 would be on a number line with intervals of .1)
Use measurements within base 10 (cm, m) to express fractions in decimal notation (3/10 m = .3m)

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

If you order a pizza to share with others and you pay per slice, how could you figure out how much each person needs to pay? What is a decimal fraction? How can a decimal fraction be turned into a decimal? When is it necessary to have an understanding of fractions in real life? Why is it important to identify fractions as representations of equal parts of a whole? If 100 cents makes a dollar and I have 90 cents, how many parts of the dollar do I have?

After the Game

How did being a waiter at the Pizza Parlor help the boy learn more about fractions for his test? How can having knowledge of place values help you convert decimal fractions to decimals and vice versa? In the game you had to divide up a pizza with 4 people - how did you know how many slices to give each person? Does it matter if the amount each person got was represented by decimals or fractions? What did you notice about the relationship between decimals and fractions? How could you tell who paid the least and the most when using fractions, decimals, and the number line?
