Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Similarity Through Transformations. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Two figures in the plane are said to be congruent if there is a sequence of rigid motions that takes one figure onto the other
Experiment with translations (sliding a figure in a particular direction for a particular distance), rotations (rotates around a particular point called the center of rotation) and reflections (flipping a point or figure over a particular line called the line of reflection).
Two figures are considered the same if one can be superimposed on the other.
Dilations of the same shape are similar.
Two figures are similar if there is a sequence of rigid motions and dilations that places one figure directly on top of the other.
Reflections, rotations, and translations, and compositions of these, are called rigid motions.
Rigid motions preserve the lengths of line segments and the measurements of angles.
Terminology for transformations, image, pre-image, and preserve are used to describe the effects of rigid motions and other transformations.
A sequence of rigid motions taking figure A to figure B can also find a sequence taking figure B to figure A.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

In which ways can you move a shape around on your desk? When you slide, turn or flip a shape, what happens to the size of the shape? What are some ways to tell if two shapes are congruent?

After the Game

What did you find most difficult when trying to superimpose the shapes during the game? How are the transformations demonstrated in the game (rotation, dilation, and reflection) similar and different from one another? In this game when you had to do more than one move to get to the other ship, what were strategies or thought processes that went through your head to help you get the answer?
