Description

Space is the final frontier - and we'll need all our smarts to survive out there! Use the critical concepts of dilation and contraction to overcome the challenges of exploring the universe.

Vocabulary Words

dilation
isometry
cartesian plane
scale factor
congruent figures

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Describe Transformation Using Coordinates. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Dilations of the same shape are similar.
Describe the relationship between the coordinates of the image and the pre-image under rigid motions.
Dilations do not change angles.
All lengths of line segments in the plane are scaled by the same factor when we apply a dilation.
Dilations scale distances between points.
Dilations are transformations that expand or contract the plane of a given figure.
Given a figure on a coordinate plane, describe the effects of dilating the figure using a scale factor by using coordinates to describe the figure after the dilation.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What does it mean when two figures are similar? If we change a figure using a scale factor that is larger than 1, what will happen to the figure? In this game you will have to determine the scale factor that would hit a target - how do you determine the scale factor to achieve the desired dilation? How do you determine the center of dilation?

After the Game

When was it necessary for you to use a scale factor that was less than one? What happened to the figure when you used a scale factor that was less than one? In this game your laser beam sometime started at 1 and other times it would be at 2 or 3 - how did this starting point affect the scale factor? In the game, you created a space bridge - what did you have to do to decide how long the line segment or bridge needed to be?
