Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Decimal Notation for Tenths and Hundredths. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Decimal fractions can be converted into decimal notation by using the denominator to indicate where the decimal will be for the numerator (4/100 = .04, 4/10 = .4).
Fractions with a denominator of 10 or 100 are called decimal fractions.
The number of digits to the right of the decimal point indicates the number of zeros in the denominator (3.40 = 340/100 and 3.4 = 34/10)
Use measurements within base 10 (cm, m) to express fractions in decimal notation (3/10 m = .3m)
Write decimal numbers shown in grids (limited to tenths and hundredths grids).

Where were you successful in this game? What did you have to know in order to be successful? What was your strategy to efficiently identify decimal and fraction equivalence? When looking at fractions and decimals side by side, how can you be sure that you have converted the decimal correctly? Where might you use this information in your everyday life? What are two different ways to say the decimal 98.76?
