Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Collecting Measurement Data with Rulers. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Rulers are marked with ½ and ¼ inch increments.
Measure real world objects to the nearest ¼ inch.
Create an appropriately numbered scale for the line plot. (ex. If all measurements are from 3-5 inches the scale should reflect the measurements.)
Use tick marks for data points for each measurement.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

Why is data collected and organized? How does the type of data influence how we choose to display it? What units of measurement can a ruler use?

After the Game

If my ruler broke and I only have the piece that goes from 5 to 12 inches, can I still use the ruler to measure length? My ruler is only marked with ¼ inches- can I use it to measure to the nearest ½ inch? How difficult or easy was it to measure the items provided? Did you use the ticks to determine the correct answer?
