Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Solve Problems By Graphing On A Coordinate Plane. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

The x value determines the horizontal movement away from the origin with positive values denoting movement to the right of the origin and negative x values denoting movement to the left of the origin.
Interpret the components of a rectangular grid structure as line segments or lines.
Location is precisely described using the intersection of those lines and line segments.
The coordinate plane is 2 perpendicular lines that serve as the starting point for describing precise location. The horizontal line is labeled the x-axis and the vertical line is labeled the y-axis.
Where the x-axis and y-axis meet is called the origin and it represents 0 for both axis - the point is therefore (0, 0).
The first number in an ordered pair is labeled the x coordinate and the second the y coordinate and is expressed as (x, y).
The y value determines the vertical movement away from the origin with positive values denoting movement up from the origin and negative x values denoting movement down from the origin.
When locating a point on the graph, you would first move from the origin horizontally as marked by the x value and then move vertically from that point as denoted by the y value.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is a coordinate plane? Where do you find the origin? What are the x and y coordinates of the origin point? Which coordinate (x or y) should you find first and which direction do you move to reach this coordinate? Which coordinate (x or y) should you find second and which direction do you move to reach this coordinate?

After the Game

How many quadrants are there? If you move to the left of origin on the x-axis or down from the origin on the y-axis, what type of numbers will you have? How are the coordinates related in quadrant I and III? How did you learn to decipher which line is the x-axis and which is the y-axis? Which direction do you have to move first when find a coordinate on the grid?
