Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Find Volume Using Fractional Side Lengths. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Recognize volume as an attribute of a solid figure.
A unit of volume, a cube with a side length of 1 unit, is called a unit cube.
Find the total volume of solid figures composed of two right rectangular prisms.
Justification of volumes meeting set criterion by finding volumes and adding or subtracting volumes.
Develop visualization skills connected to mathematical concepts. Recognize the existence of, and visualize, components of three-dimensional shapes that are not visible from a given viewpoint.
Side Lengths are fractions, and mixed numbers.
Use unit cubes as a basis for students understanding of volume as a measurable attribute.
Volume is consists of layers of measurable units.
Use Standard Units of Measure cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft and any unit that the problem presents.
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional side lengths by packing it with unit cubes and show that the volume is the same as multiplying the edge lengths of the rectangular prism.
Apply the formulas for volume (V = l x w x h or V = B x h) to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is volume? How can you calculate the volume of a house that is 1/2 units x 1/2 units x 6 units? Imagine the unit block is only 1/2 cubic meter - how many blocks do you need to construct a volume of 1 cubic meter. 9 cubic meters? Imagine the unit block is only 1/3 cubic meter - how many blocks do you need to construct a volume of 1 cubic meter. 9 cubic meters?

After the Game

How do you calculate volume? Can you combine multiple shapes/prisms to get a combined volume? We have a new wave of space frogs - and more homes to build: if we have unit cubes of 1/2 meter in length, how could we make a home with a volume of 6 cubic meters? How many cubes are needed to build a volume of 4/3 cubic meters when the blocks are each 1/3 cubic meters? In some levels of the game, you were not able to construct a house as a rectangle because there was not enough room - how did you solve this problem?
