Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Round Whole Numbers To Any Place. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

In the base 10 system, the value of each place is 10 times the value of the place to the immediate right.
Students may have to classify what numbers round to a place value given a set of numbers.
Understand that when rounding to any place value the number to the immediate right is the determining place value, any additional place values to the right are not considered in the rounding process (1,499 rounded to the nearest thousand is determined by the digit in the hundreds place 4 which will determine the rounded number).
The digit in the place value to the immediate right of the place value being rounded determines the rounded value. If the digit to the immediate right is 4 or below then the place value to the left will remain the same and all other digits to the right of the place value rounded will become 0’s, (1,499 rounded to the nearest thousand becomes 1000).
The digit in the place value to the immediate right of the place value being rounded determines the rounded value. If the digit to the immediate right is 5 or above then the place value to the left will move up one consecutive number and all other digits to the right of the place value rounded will become 0’s, (1,511 rounded to the nearest thousand becomes 2,000)
Numbers rounded up can graduate to the next place value to the left if the number to the immediate right of the number is in the next to the highest place value and its value is 5 or greater ( 9,734 rounded to the nearest thousand becomes 10,000).

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

How can understanding the value of digits help estimate, round, and calculate the solution to a problem? Can you describe strategies you would use to round numbers? What is the rule for rounding numbers? Why is knowing place value important to rounding numbers?

After the Game
