Description

The human kingdom is about to fall in the hands of the dark forces of the orcs! Learn the concept of negative and positive numbers while solving a conflict between the humans, elves and the orcs. Players move through the kingdom and partake in placing positive and negative numbers on a number line. They see real life situations using temperature, sea level and describing quantities. Players also learn the meaning of 0 in each situation!

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Use Positive And Negative To Describe Opposites. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Number line is extended to the left of the number line to include negative numbers.
Find natural situations to conceptualize positive and negative (above or below sea level, temperature, money etc.)
Introduction of negative numbers but not integers (as rational fractions and decimals are not yet included).
Recognize 0 as neither negative or positive. Zero has no value and can be used as a measuring point for value (less value the further left from 0 and more value the further right from 0).

Before the Game

What is a positive number? What is a negative number? What is the opposite of -49 on a number line? How are integers and absolute values used in real-world situations?

After the Game

What is the significance behind the sign (positive/negative) of a number? What relationship does the sign of a number (positive/negative) have with the distance between that number and zero? What is the opposite of 32? Can you write the numbers 90, -10, 40, and -40 on a number line? If you pay someone $300, would you represent your money as a positive or negative number? Can you use >, <, or = to compare these two numbers: (19) __ (-42) ?
