Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Understanding Random Sample. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Data is the information gathered from statistical questions.
Statistical Questions anticipate and generate data that varies.
At random refers to all outcomes having equal chances of being picked.
Random sampling allows results from a sample to be generalized to a much larger body of data.
A statistic computed from a random sample, such as the mean of the sample, can be used as an estimate of that same characteristic of the population from which the sample was selected.
Identify representative, random, and biased samples.
Identify validity of inferences.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

How can we predict the outcomes of future events with statistics and probability? Can you explain the difference between representative, bias and random samples? Which type of sampling is best used to make a generalization about a population? What type of data can be analyzed statistically?

After the Game

In the surveys that you distributed in the game, what did it mean to have bias? Were there times that bias was good/bad? As you evaluated the accuracy of your data, was it usually better to have a larger or smaller sample size of surveyed people? How did sampling and using sample generalization help you to make decisions as a ruler?
