Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Interpret Expressions With Grouping. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

An expression is a phrase in a sentence about a mathematical or real-world situation (Contains numbers and can contain operations).
An Algebraic Expression is an expression that contains variables.
Interpret expressions algebraically (Add 4 to x interpreted as 4 + x).
Expressions can have more than one operation (Interpret there are 3 pencils and 2 boxes of p pencils as 3+2p).
Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient).

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

In an expression, what is a term? In the term, 3x, what do you call the 3? What is a constant? What is a product? What is a factor? What is a variable? What is a coefficient? What are the different parts of an expression?

After the Game

How did the number of eggs reflect the values of x and y? How did the game show you that an expression can contain more than one operation? Why did the game contain two different types cartons to represent the x and y terms in the expression? Did it matter which variable you solved first in the game problems? What are two different ways that you can solve 3(2+1)? What did you learn an algebraic expression is? What has to be in these problems?
