Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Differentiate Shapes Based on Lines and Angles. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Classify triangles by side and by angle using the above terms.
Classify parallelograms, rectangles, squares, trapezoids, rhombus using parallel and perpendicular lines.
A trapezoid is defined as “A quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides.”
Identify a rule for a given set of shapes.
Classify a shape given rules for classification.
Equilateral triangles have 3 congruent sides and 3 congruent angles.
Isosceles triangles have 2 congruent sides that are opposite of each other. The angles formed by the isosceles sides with the 3rd side are also congruent.
Scalene triangles have no congruent sides or angles.
Acute triangles have 3 angles that are each less than 90 degrees.
Right triangles have one angle than is exactly 90 degrees.
Obtuse triangles have one angle hat is greater than 90 degrees.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What are perpendicular lines? What is an angle? What are the different types of angles? What are the different types of triangles? What is a quadrilateral? How can you put shapes into different categories? What is the difference between parallel and perpendicular lines? How can you tell if an angle is greater than or less than 90 degrees? How can you tell if angles are congruent or not in a triangle?

After the Game

There could be more than one answer for finding a pizza with parallel lines - what are some of the pizza shapes that would have fit this order? How could you tell if a pizza had perpendicular lines? What is the difference between a scalene and isosceles triangle and how can you tell What symbol tells you if there is a right angle? What makes a right triangle?
