Instructions
Play through this interactive game to learn about Forces and Motion. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.
Main Concepts
A force is a push or pull on an object.(ES)
Each force acts on one particular object.
A force has both a strength and a direction.
Net force is the sum of all the forces acting on an object.
When the net force on an object is zero, the forces are balanced.
When the net force on an object is not zero, the forces are unbalanced.
Unbalanced forces cause changes to the object’s speed or direction of motion.
An object at rest typically has multiple forces acting on it, but they add to give zero net force on the object.
Discussion Questions
Before the Game
What is a force of motion? What is the difference between pushing and pulling? What is net force? What is gravity? What is holding you in your seat or on the floor?
After the Game
Why do we want the net force to be zero? What did you learn about pushing and pulling? What do you think would have been different if the robots were of different sizes? When a pencil is resting on the desk, what forces are acting on it? What is an example of unbalanced forces acting on an object?
