Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Weathering and Erosion. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.

Main Concepts

Some natural processes occur suddenly while others occur gradually over time.
Coastal erosion occurs when water waves carry away soil and sediment from a shoreline.
Erosion is the process by which rock, soil, and/or sediments are transported from one location to another.
Weathering is the process by which rocks, soil, and sediments are broken down into smaller particles.
Sediment is a small piece of weathered rock.
Different landforms on Earth include mountains, hills, valleys, canyons, deltas, sand dunes, and plains.
Rocks are hard materials found on Earth’s surface made of one or more minerals.
Weather conditions, such as rainfall, can shape the landforms on Earth through weathering and erosion.
A sand dune forms when sand is eroded by wind and deposited onto another location, producing a hill.
A delta is a fan-shaped piece of land that forms at the mouth of a river from the deposition of sand and mud.

What is the difference between weathering and erosion? What are some things that can change the appearance of earth?

After the Game

What are some differences between biological, chemical, and mechanical weathering? How do formations such as stalactites and stalagmites form inside a cave? What role does water play in the various types of erosion you explored during the game?
