Description

This game will let you safely play with fire. You are a lab technician who has to fulfill orders given by your supervisor. You will use your torch to reach the desired thermal energy level or physical state for the objects that are brought in front of you. You'll need to know what happens when substances are heated or cooled and understand what impacts a substance's state of matter.

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Temperature and Total Energy. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Temperature can be measured with a thermometer.
Thermal energy, also known as internal energy, is the energy associated with the random movement of particles in a substance.
The total thermal energy of a substance depends on the state of the substance.
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance.
The total thermal energy of a substance is proportional to its temperature.
Kinetic energy is the energy associated with the motion of matter.
The total thermal energy of a substance is not necessarily equal to its temperature.
The faster the motion of particles in a substance, the greater the temperature.
The total thermal energy of a substance is proportional to the number of atoms in the substance.
Temperature scales include: Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin.
Standard units of mass are grams or kilograms.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is kinetic energy? What tool do we use to measure the amount of kinetic energy in an object? How do we increase the kinetic energy of molecules in a substance?

After the Game

What is the relationship between kinetic energy and temperature? What units can we use to measure temperature? How does state of matter affect the temperature and kinetic energy of an object or substance? What three factors contribute to an object's thermal energy? What is the difference between a conductor and an insulator?
