Description

Learn how light is reflected, absorbed, and transmitted by bringing light back to a dark land. Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Reflection, Absorption, and Transmission of Light. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Visible light includes all of the colors of the rainbow.
Light is the transfer of energy via electromagnetic waves.
Materials that transmit light well are transparent or translucent.
Materials that do not transmit light are opaque.
The shininess/dullness of a material is determined by its ability to reflect light.
Smooth objects like mirrors reflect light perfectly.
Some objects (like stars and light bulbs) emit visible light.
The color of a material is determined by the wavelengths/frequencies of light that it reflects and absorbs.
Some materials transmit some wavelengths of electromagnetic waves but not others.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

What is light? What type of wave creates light? What are two sources that generate light?

After the Game

What are four things you learned about mirrors by playing the game? How does the texture of a surface affect its ability to transmit light? What colors of light are included in white light? How are opaque objects different from transparent objects?
