Instructions
Play through this interactive game to learn about Write Simple Expressions. Suitable for Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5.
Main Concepts
Model with illustrations or pictures the value of expressions without evaluating (3 x (4+8) as a picture with 4 red and 8 green shapes written 3x to show that 3 x (4+8) is 3x as large as (4+8).
Written expressions do not have to be evaluated but interpretation can be drawn from expressions (2 x (7+201) can be said to be twice the sum of 201 and 7).
Given scenarios, write expressions to accurately reflect their mathematical value with all 4 operations and can include grouping symbols (Parenthesis, brackets or braces).
Discussion Questions
Before the Game
Does it matter which order you add 3+ 5 or 5+3? What about 5-3 vs. 3-5? What do the parentheses in the following expression mean? (3-2) + 5
After the Game
If the game told you to subtract 1 from 9, which order did you have to enter the numbers into the expression for the marbles to make it correctly to the end? How did the parentheses affect how you wrote the expression? What is another way to write (2 - 1) + 4
