Description

Charles Darwin will teach you about natural selection. Listen and learn as Darwin narrates his story to you. You will have to remember what Darwin teaches you so that you can apply his theories later in the game. After you complete a quiz, you will have to try keeping a species alive in its environment for 1,000,000 years. Use your knowledge to help your species adapt and survive.

Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Natural Selection. Suitable for Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6.

Main Concepts

Natural selection is the theory that traits which increase the likelihood of an organism reproducing will be passed onto offspring while those which hinder reproduction will not.
Natural selection can be influenced by genetic mutations that create new traits in a species.
High genetic variation improves the chances that a species can survive a change in the environment.
Evolution occurs when natural selection acts on the genetic variation in a population and changes the distribution of traits gradually over multiple generations.
Evolution occurs because genomes change over time, causing new traits in a species and eventually the formation of a new species.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

Who is Charles Darwin? What is meant by Natural Selection? What are the causes of mutations?

After the Game

What enables some species to carry on genetically while others become extinct? How do different environments affect evolution of the same species? Give an example. Why did you give the bird long legs in the game when a predator was introduced?
