Instructions

Play through this interactive game to learn about Temperature, Thermal Energy, and Particle Motion. Suitable for Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8.

Main Concepts

Thermal energy, also known as internal energy, is the energy associated with the random movement of particles in a substance.
The total thermal energy of a substance is not necessarily equal to its temperature.
The total thermal energy of a substance depends on the state of the substance.
The faster the motion of particles in a substance, the greater the temperature.
Temperature scales include: Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin.
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance.
Temperature can be measured with a thermometer.
Kinetic energy is the energy associated with the motion of matter.
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from a substance with a higher temperature to a substance with a lower temperature.
Heat is commonly referred to as thermal energy, but in science, these are different terms.

Discussion Questions

Before the Game

This game is about collecting data. What are some of the ways scientists collect information about the world? How do scientists collect information about temperature? What different temperature scales exist? In this game you will learn about kinetic energy and temperature conversion. Why do we need to know how to convert temperatures to other measurements of temperature?

After the Game

This game taught you about temperature scales. Why are there three different temperature scales? What is the benefit to each of them? The game taught you about kinetic energy. What is kinetic energy? Thermal energy is different from kinetic energy. What factors influence an object's thermal energy?
